43rd session of the Human Rights Council. Statement delivered by Ambassador Veronika Bard.
Madame President,
Sweden aligns itself with the statement of the EU.
Regarding the human rights situation in Myanmar and Iran, Sweden refers to its earlier statements this session under the same agenda item.
Globally, human rights defenders face serious challenges – threats, persecution and violence. Sweden welcomes the important contributions of the Special Rapporteur, and strongly supports the renewal of his mandate.
In Egypt and Saudi Arabia, restrictions on civil society and reports of use of counter-terrorism legislation to target human rights defenders cause concern.
Shrinking space for political opposition and civil society in Venezuela is troubling. We urge Tanzania, Bahrain and Turkmenistan to respect the rights of human rights defenders.
The human rights situation in China remains concerning. The joint EU statement has already made reference to Swedish citizen Gui Minhai.
The deteriorating human rights situation in Russia, including the shutdown of human rights organizations, is alarming.
In Palestine, continued human rights violations under the Israeli occupation remain of concern, including the detention of minors, evictions and forced transfers. Settlements and possible annexation violate international law. Palestine needs to ensure respect for human rights. Continued human rights violations in Gaza are a cause of concern. We urge all parties to ensure that the rights of civil society are protected.
We call on Russia and Turkey to live up to their commitments to uphold the ceasefire in Idlib and to ensure rapid, safe and sustained humanitarian access. In northeast Syria, we remain concerned by the situation for civilians, including Kurds and other minorities, following Turkey's military operation. Accountability for all violations of human rights and IHL in Syria must be ensured.
I thank you.
