”Prostitution is incompatible with universally accepted principles of human rights - such as the dignity and worth of the human person and the equal rights of men and women”, affirms Swedish Minister-Counsellor Ms. Karin Bolin. She was the opening speaker at an important side event on the “the Nordic Model - a good practice to counter sexual exploitation and human trafficking”” last Friday on the sidelines of the Human Rights Council. At the same event was, among other, France sharing their experiences from having adopted a legislation in line with Sweden’s.
The Swedish government is convinced that it’s impossible to end trafficking for sexual exploitation without addressing prostitution. Sweden has a prohibition against buying sex since the 1st of January 1999. The criminalization of this act has been found an efficient instrument to combat trafficking, to combat men’s violence against women and not the least – to protect human rights and achieve gender equality.
