Extension of Swedish Support to Ugandan Public Universities for Research

20 May 2020

Last week, the Embassy and Makerere University signed an agreement for the extension of Sweden's support to research in Uganda. This support is aimed at consolidating the achievements of the previous four phases of research cooperation. The ammendment of the existing agreement includes an addition of Ushs 18 billion and the extension of the activity period by 24 months to June 2022.

The extension shall focus on consolidating and ensuring the institutional preparedness of the 5 Ugandan Public Universities to continue to support research activities in Uganda after June 2022. Universities that shall benefit from this shall include Kyambogo University, Busitema University, Gulu Univeristy and Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

Prof. Nawangwe, the Makerere University Vice Chancellor thanked the government and people of Sweden for their support to research from the year 2000. "Sweden's support is the biggest investment in human resource development and research in Uganda. The extension shall benefit the other 4 public universities most, as the remaining students under this cooperation are mostly not staff of Makerere. We hope the collaboration shall continue to the benefit of all."

Ambassador Lindgärde said, "this support has been successful in developing capacity at both the institutional and individual level with 750 students being trained since the beginning. We are pleased that the government of Uganda is supporting research at Makerere University now, as funding of research should be steered nationally. Our hope is to consolidate Uganda's research capacity by 2022."
