Coordination number

Swedish children born abroad who have never had a Swedish passport, national ID card, or been registered in Sweden need a coordination number to apply for their first Swedish passport.

Applications for a coordination number are made at the embassy only if the purpose is to apply for a passport. When a decision for the coordination number has been made by The Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) you can proceed applying for a temporary passport for your child.

The following documents are required when applying for a coordination Number:

  • Both parents must come in person to the Embassy with the child and present their valid passports
  • Original Birth Certificate, in which both parents names are shown
  • Marriage Certificate, if married
  • If the mother is a Swedish citizen and registered in Sweden and gives birth to a child outside of Sweden a Medical Certificate (in which a doctor or the equivalent to a doctor verifies that the mother has carried the child) has to be submitted.

All documents must be originals and both guardians must appear in person at the embassy or consulate together with the child in connection with the application. Please be informed that additional documents also can be requested when applying for the coordination number based on individual circumstances.
