On November 21-23, the Consulate General of Sweden in Shanghai, together with the Danish, Finnish and Norwegian Consulates, launched a “Reducing Food Waste” initiative in Shanghai. The initiative was part of the Nordic Food Policy Lab project of the Nordic Council of Ministers.
Deputy Consul General of Sweden in Shanghai Jakob Holthuis spoke at the “Reducing Food Waste” seminar
The “Reducing Food Waste” initiative was carried out in a 3-day program. It started with a “Don’t Let Good Taste Go to Waste” dinner, which served tasty dishes made from ugly produce and products near the end of their shelf life. The following day featured a seminar on the role of distributors and consumers in food waste reduction and a workshop to seek food waste solutions. It ended with a Zero Food Waste Challenge, where participants tried to create zero food waste solutions for 2050 in teams.
The initiative provided a platform for Nordic and Chinese policy makers, distributors, non-governmental organizations, opinion leaders and consumers as well as international organizations to exchange experience on and explore solutions to food waste. Representatives from World Wide Fund for Nature, Nordic Food Policy Lab, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Norwegian food waste consultancy Matvett, Technical University of Denmark, Oasis Green Food Bank and the Chinese restaurant industry shared their views on challenges and opportunities on the food waste issue. Nearly 300 people participated in the program.
The initiative was co-financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers and Shanghai International Culture Association and supported by Education First, Oatly, Wayne’s Coffee, the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide and other Nordic and Chinese partners.
