On April 26, Consul General Lisette Lindahl hosted a press conference and launch of a new Chinese edition of Selma Lagerlöf's "The Wonderful Adventures of Nils" at her residence in Shanghai. The new edition is translated by Wan Zhi and published by Great Star Media.
A classic Swedish children's book, "The Wonderful Adventures of Nils" was written by the first female Nobel Laureate in Literature, Selma Lagerlöf, more than a century ago. Although it was intended to be a geography reader for Swedish public schools, the book has gained popularity all over the world and has been translated into many languages. Three years after it was published, in 1909, the author was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for "the lofty idealism, vivid imagination and spiritual perception that characterize her writings".
Although it was first introduced to China years ago, a new full translation of "The Wonderful Adventures of Nils" with the original illustrations in colour is now available from Chinese publishing company Great Star. This edition is translated by Wan Zhi, the pen name of Chinese-Swedish writer and poet Chen Maiping.
The press conference opened with speeches from the Consul General and a representative of the publisher. Wan Zhi, translator Anna Gustafsson Chen and Chinese children's literature writer Qin Wenjun then engaged in a panel discussion on the topic "From children's book to Nobel Prize in Literature: Selma Lagerlöf and 'The Wonderful Adventures of Nils'".
Around 15 journalists attended the event.
