If you want to visit Sweden and you are a citizen of a country outside the EU, you need to apply for a visa.
Please note that from March 1st 2021 the Swedish embassy in Dar es Salaam no longer handles visa applications to Sweden.
Tanzanian residents should submit their Schengen visa applications at Sweden Visa Application Centre, VFS Global/FMC, Maktaba Square Business Park, 4th Floor – Wing B, Plot No 75/27, Maktaba Street, Dar es Salaam. For further information regarding visa applications, please visit or contact VFS Global Phone; +255 22 2221915
The Schengen visa application will then be handled and decided by the Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi. You can no longer submit your application for Schengen visa at the Embassy of Sweden in Dar es Salaam or by the online facility.
You need to submit your application in good time before travelling. According to article 9 section 1 in the visa code, EU 2019/1155, you should apply not less than 15 days before the planned visit begins. The 15 days is counted from when the application is received by the Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi. Consequently, you must calculate with the transportation time when planning for your submission.
A late application might be refused or in some cases a request for a new flight booking, insurance and even new invitation will be sent. A request for new documents is likely to increase the handling time further.
The normal transportation time one way is 2-3 days for Dar-es-Salaam to Nairobi.
The aplication should be handle within 15 days (if the application is admissible), counted from when the Embassy in Nairobi has received the application. If an application is not complete or if an interview or document verification is needed the handling time can be extended up to 45 days.
Inquiries about Schengen visas should be addressed to the Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi by email (ambassaden.nairobi-visum@gov.se) or phone. Please see the Embassy´s Website for phone hours and holidays, Contact - Sweden Abroad .
Since the Swedish Embassy in Dar-es-Salaam is no longer handling Schengen visas, consequently your email will be sent to the Embassy in Nairobi. Inquiry by phone directed to the Embassy in Dar-es-Salaam will not be answered (you will only be referred to the Embassy in Nairobi).
Extended Application Submission Periods
It is now possible for an application to be lodged six months in advance of a trip. However, any application must be submitted 15 calendar days before the intended trip to the Schengen Area.
