EU Citizen's Family Members

As a family member of an EU/EEA citizen exercising their right of free movement in accordance with Directive 2004/38/EC,  you can get a visa through a facilitated process to travel with your family member or to join him/her in Sweden.

PLEASE NOTE that Swedish citizen living in Sweden are NOT exercising EU treaty rights and they do therefore NOT hold a right of residence based on Directive 2004/38/EC in their home country, unless they have recently moved back to Sweden from another EU/EEA country where they were exercising their right of free movement. 

Family members are:

• Spouse/partner/common law spouse
• The direct descendants (children) who are under the age of 21 or are dependents, and those of the spouse or partner.
• The dependent direct relatives in the ascending line (e.g. parents) and those of the spouse or partner.

Basic facts

You can apply for a short-stay Schengen visa (type C) which will permit you to enter Sweden and the Schengen area.

If your aim is to settle down in Sweden, you must apply for a residence card for a family member of an EU/EEA citizen within three months from entering Sweden. Information about how to apply for a residence card can be found on the Swedish Migration Agency's webpage.

How to apply for an entry visa

Book an appointment

As a family member of an EU/EEA- citizen you should contact the Embassy directly on ambassaden.teheran-visum@gov.se in order to receive an appointment. In the email you should attach a copy of your passport, your family member's passport or national ID card as well as a document showing your relation. You will usually be given an appointment within a few working days.

Visit the embassy

All family members of an EU or EEA national applying for a visa must submit the following obligatory supporting documents at the appointment at the Embassy:

• Application form
• Your passport or travel document. Make sure that your passport has at least two blank pages.
• Proof of relation. E.g.marriage certificate or birth certificate.
• Copy of the EU / EEA national's passport or national identity card
• If you are a dependent family member you must submit documents showing your dependence.

Please note that a family member of an EU or EEA citizen does NOT pay an application fee for Schengen visa when the directive is applicable.

It is generally not necessary to submit any other documents, although the Embassy strongly recommends that you always travel with valid travel insurance.

Wait for the decision

When you submit your application at the Embassy, you are given a receipt with information about when you can collect the decision, which is normally two weeks after the application date.
