Regional Programme for the Middle East and North Africa

The objective of Sweden’s international development cooperation is to create conditions to improves the lives of people living in poverty and oppression. Sweden’s development cooperation is based on the principles of aid and development effectiveness, the 2030 Agenda, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda and the Paris Agreement. Sweden’s feminist foreign policy will guide the activities.

Regional Programme for the Middle East and North Africa

In January 2021, the Swedish government adopted a new Regional Strategy for Sweden's Development Cooperation with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) 202125.

Countries of focus include: Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen. Activities will contribute to the following objectives:

  • Democracy, human rights, the rule of law and gender equality
  • Inclusive and sustainable economic development and regional trade
  • Environmentally and climate resilient sustainable development and
    sustainable use of natural resources
  • Peaceful and inclusive societies
  • Peaceful development in Yemen

The Swedish development cooperation in the region will mainly include regional and sub-regional initiatives and be limited to countries classified as developing countries by the OECD.

Sweden also has specific strategies for cooperation with Palestine and Iraq. In addition, Sida also provides humanitarian support, in particular to Syria and Yemen.

Sweden's mission

Sweden has diplomatic relations with almost all States in the world. It has embassies and consulates in around half of these. Sweden's foreign representation consists of approximately 100 missions abroad and 350 honorary consulates.
