Passport and national ID card for children

Please read the information carefully and complete all necessary forms before your visit to the embassy. All documents must be original or certified copies.

To apply for a passport, the child must have a Swedish personal number or coordination number and must come to the embassy with at least one legal guardian.

Book your passport appointment through the embassy's booking system.

Steps for a complete application.

1. Mandatory forms:

Complete the following forms before your visit:

2. Photo ID for legal guardians:

    • Both guardians need valid photo IDs (Swedish/British passport, national Swedish ID card, or Swedish/British driver's license) to prove their identity.
    • If only one guardian accompanies the child, they must also bring the other guardian's valid photo ID.
    • In the case of sole custody, a certificate or court decision must be presented.

    3. Photo ID for the child:

      • The child's current passport or ID card.
      • If the child has dual citizenship, bring the passport and other documents such as certificates/birth certificates that can confirm how and when the child obtained the citizenship.
      • If the child was born abroad and has never lived in Sweden, bring a birth certificate.

      4. Emigration to the UK before 1998:

          • If a Swedish parent emigrated to the UK before 1998, bring a residence permit, EUSS, Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), "Letter of non-acquisition of British citizenship," or a printout showing your pre-settled or settled status.

          5. Check information with the Swedish Tax Agency:

            • Passports and national ID cards are issued in the name registered with the Swedish Tax Agency. For address changes, complete and bring the form "New address/electoral roll for emigrants" which can be downloaded from the Swedish Tax Agency's website.

            6. If the passport is lost/stolen:

              • Show a police report. If the passport or ID card has been lost or stolen, it must be reported to the Swedish Police Authority.

              Payment and fees

The application fee is paid during the visit (card payment accepted, not American Express or Diners Club). See fees for passports/national ID cards here.

              After the visit

If the passport application is complete, it takes about three weeks for the passport/national ID card to be produced and sent to the embassy. Passports and ID cards for children under 18 must be collected by a legal guardian at the embassy or at one of the consulates in Belfast, Edinburgh or Gibraltar. The child does not need to be present when collecting the passport/national ID card. More information about collecting passports and ID cards can be found here. You do not need to book an appointment to collect your passport at the embassy, but an appointment is usually required at the consulates.
